All Gut: How Probiotic Supplements Can Help Your Skin

As far as organs go, we love skin, but the gut, your digestive system, made up of many organs, is pretty important in our eyes too. Our gut helps to separate what our body needs from what it doesn’t need, and allows us to get nutrition from what otherwise is just food. That’s fairly frickin’ cool, in our nerdie eyes.

Our gut has its own microbiome, made up of bacteria, fungi, viruses and microbes. It does sound gross but it is anything but because without a healthy balance of these very elements, our gut isn’t functioning as well as it should. When our gut microbiome is healthy, our immune system is operating optimally and our body won’t be as easily inflamed.

What does this have to do with skin, you ask? Well, inflammation is at the heart of most skin concerns that we come across. Rosacea, psoriasis, acne and eczema are specifically inflammatory conditions, but inflammation also causes our skin to age faster. This is why we strongly advise against too much caffeine, smoking and sugar too - all of these things are a one-way ticket to chronic inflammation and thus accelerated extrinsic skin ageing.

The gut-skin axis

The gut-skin axis is a theory in dermatology and skin whereby it is believed that the function, or malfunction, of the gut will cause a knock-on effect to the skin. Studies have shown that in humans and rats, oral supplementation of probiotics resulted in better skin function and assisted with skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema.

Some are sceptical of the gut-skin axis, but so many of you fantastic Nerd Networkers have seen phenomenal results from taking probiotics. Because of that, we’d tend to believe there is a connection!

Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Youth Biome

Advanced Nutrition Programme, a supplement brand that you will know well from your nerdie routine, have just launched Skin Youth Biome.

Skin Youth Biome is a supplement that brings the power of carefully-selected probiotic strains with anti-ageing properties, as well as vitamin C.

The four live cultures contained in Skin Youth Biome have been proven to be antioxidant in nature, supportive of immunity and to have anti-ageing benefits.

Other proven claims of these strains include…

  • Better wound healing and assistance in the repair of wounds - ideal for those with acne, eczema and psoriasis
  • Decrease of stress - stress causes inflammation, so this is key when it comes to slowing extrinsic skin ageing
  • Fights free radicals and oxidative stress - once again, reducing inflammation and assisting in slowing extrinsic skin ageing

Vitamin C, as you hopefully know, assists in the normal production of collagen, the protein that keeps our skin firm and plump.

In surveys performed by Advanced Nutrition Programme, there was a 43% increase in skin hydration from those taking Skin Youth Biome over 12 weeks, as well as a wrinkle depth improvement of 26%.

Each Skin Youth Biome contains 60 capsules, so it is a two-month supply and all packaging is biodegradable, recyclable and sustainable, which makes it good for your ecosystem and the general ecosystem!

It is vegetarian AND gluten-free, and made in the UK.

Unlike some probiotics, there is no need to refrigerate Skin Youth Biome so you can store it solely in your handbag, if you wish, and bring your supplements wherever you need to.
